One word. A long pause. Another word with nothing to do with the first.

The technique underneath all of this has a plain form you can do tonight without an app. Think of a concrete, unrelated thing. Hold the image a few seconds. Move to another that has nothing to do with it. Repeat until you lose track, which is the desired outcome.

In the trial that tested it, 154 university students who complained of a racing mind at bedtime worked through words delivered roughly one every eight seconds. Pre-sleep arousal fell and sleep quality rose, with large effect sizes. The measure worth noting is that sleep effort fell too. The trial could not show a difference from a structured problem-solving exercise — it was too small to — and the technique has one advantage: it is done at bedtime, where problem-solving has to happen earlier in the day.

Eight seconds is not arbitrary. It is roughly how long it takes to build an image unprompted and let it fade.

> By the end of a Sheeps story, each short scene and the silence after it is one of those items.

Radio is that technique with nothing wrapped around it: one concrete noun, a pause you set, another noun, for as long as you leave it on. The stories are the same idea dressed as something listenable, and the pauses that grow from two seconds to seven are walking toward the same cadence from the other side.

## The longer answer

This is the form the research tested. [Cognitive shuffling, read to you](https://dreamsheeps.space/cognitive-shuffling/audio) explains the guided version — an app playing a concrete word about every eight seconds — and who it suits; the [cognitive shuffling word list](https://dreamsheeps.space/cognitive-shuffling/words) has 280 such words in 28 groups, with the one rule that makes a list work; and [what the research actually shows](https://dreamsheeps.space/cognitive-shuffling/evidence) says what the one trial found, and what it did not report.
